For designer-philosopher Brunello Cucinelli, there is nothing superficial about fashion. Into each item of clothing in the exquisitely stylish brand is sewn a deep love for both creativity and community. Cucinelli transformed the medieval village of Solomeo in Italy when he launched his company in 1985, with a goal of “making work more human, with people at its core.” The entrepreneur, who gave up engineering to read philosophy and has received an honorary degree in philosophy and ethics of human relations from the University of Perugia, was determined to give “business a meaning that goes beyond profit and reinvesting to improve the lives of workers, to enhance and restore the beauty of the world.”
With their “Hug Your Customer” philosophy and dedication to community, it is no wonder that the Mitchells have been Cucinelli admirers for years. Mitchells and Richards boast the best selection of Brunello Cucinelli in America, which means much more than the beautiful cashmere sweaters that put Cucinelli on the fashion map. A lookbook created exclusively for the Mitchells family of stores by Cucinelli showcases a dream wardrobe—in pleasing hues of beige, cream, gray and indigo—styled in a seemingly effortless marriage of chic and comfortable.
Funny enough, the Mitchells’ relationship with Brunello all started with some mushrooms. Bob Mitchell recounts, “The first time we visited Solomeo, Brunello Cucinelli took us on a tour to see what he has created in the small town in Italy and then had us to a private dinner. He served pasta with fresh truffles. My dad was so excited about the truffles that Brunello wrapped up two baseball sized truffles for him to bring back on the plane. This spoke to his passion, generosity and values. We had an immediate personal connection and that was the beginning of our business relationship and our friendship.”
“Cucinelli is one of my favorite brands,” comments Andrew Mitchell-Namdar. “I love that I can add a few pieces each season to my wardrobe and they always work together. And with the quality of their merchandise, it is all timeless.”
Big-hearted Cucinelli has partnered with Richards in supporting the Breast Cancer Alliance. Last year’s annual luncheon at the Hyatt featured a Brunello Cucinelli fashion show and the Italian brand donated a portion of sales from the subsequent trunk show at Richards to BCA. This year Cucinelli continued to give back in Greenwich, sponsoring a private luncheon and fall 2015 preview for the BCA committee members at Richards.
Another local, Margaret Hayes Adame, gave a big nod to Cucinelli when the organization she heads, Fashion Group International, presented Brunello Cucinelli with the Fashion Star Honoree Award last year. At FGI’s splashy Night of Stars gala at Cipriani Downtown, this designer’s philosophical acceptance speech had little to do with fabric and all to do with the larger fabric of life. “I’m always trying to make my decisions by combining mind and soul,” states Cucinelli.
Wearing Cucinelli with all that in mind takes sporty-chic to a whole deeper level.
